ABOUT KILBY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Kilby Elementary School opened in 1959.  In 1971, the PTA urged the renaming of the school for its first principal, R. Dean Kilby, who served there from 1959 to 1971.

COMMUNITIES SERVED

Kilby students reside in the communities of Marumsco Village and Marumsco Hills.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Kilby Elementary houses an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program and offers extended day kindergarten to its students. Kilby students may participate in SOL remediation which is offered during the second semester of the school year.

Fourth and fifth grade boys who maintain a "B" average and receive other recommendations for outstanding character are asked to be "A Kilby Gentleman" and are a member of the "Kilby Gentlemen's Club.

Literacy Events are scheduled throughout the school year and all grade levels are invited to various events.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES & SPORTS

Kilby fifth graders can serve on Safety Patrol and all students enjoy participation in Reading is Fundamental (RIF).  The school boasts an active SCA and Reading Buddies program in which fourth and fifth grade students read to their first grade partners.

Other activities will be scheduled during the school year.  Information will be sent home at the appropriate time.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENT & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Kilby parents can join the PTA and serve on the Advisory Council.  Parents are needed to pop popcorn on Friday mornings so that the students can purchase a bag of popcorn.  Popcorn is twenty-five cents (25) a bag.

WHAT MAKES OUR SCHOOL UNIQUE?

Kilby is a small, diverse and hard-working neighborhood school of about 420 children.  The school is within walking distance for 95 percent of its students.  The staff has made a commitment to the academic success of each and every student.
